Marriage at Mizpah

Genesis 31:49 –  also Mizpah, because he said, “May the Lord watch between you and me when we are absent one from another.”

There are many women and men that find themselves at “Mizpah” in their marriage. What does Mizpah mean? Mizpah plainly means although we are away from each other our covenant still stands. If any of you find yourselves at “Mizpah” right now, know that you are still in covenant and you are accountable for keeping your vows regardless of what your spouse may be doing or saying at this moment. The story in the referenced scripture deals with Laban and his conversation with Jacob. Paraphrasing for time sake, Jacob left his father in laws home taking with him his wives Rachel and Leah. Covenant was not erased because Jacob was physically changing his location. We are in this world but not of this world, covenant is spiritual and the natural situations of this world(separation) have nothing to do with that. Remember, we must seek first the Kingdom of God in everything we do. God must be first and as we keep Him first, He will perfect everything that concerns us.

For example let’s look at Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1. “But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet.” As you continue reading Peter came to Ananias first, Ananias lied and the Word states that he fell dead because he had lied to the Holy Spirit. Now came Sapphira’s turn. Sapphira was asked the same question, she also lied and sealed her fate. What would have happened if Sapphira had sided with the Holy Spirit and told the truth? My guess is that she would have been allowed to live because she chose to side with God and tell the truth instead of her husband.

No matter what you are facing in your marriage, no matter what your spouse is doing, you must choose God’s side in it. When you stood at the altar, you vowed vows to your husband with God as a witness. If or when you find yourself in a situation like Sapphira, you must choose to side with God. Choosing the things of this world is death, but to choose God is life. Will you choose God today? If you find yourself on the other side, will you repent today and get back on the winning side? God’s side has never lost a battle, it is the best place to be and it could be a matter of life or death. Remember He is Alpha and Omega. Your beginning and your end. Press past the pain, hurt, humiliation and rest in the arms of the One that holds your eternal life in His hands. There is no better Father, Lawyer or Doctor that you can have on your side than Jesus Christ. When daddy’s girls cry and follow Him, He will respond and take care of everything that concerns you.

Have a blessed day in Jesus!

I am an author and inspirational speaker. My new book are titled: "RESTORATION" and " God's Appointed Position in Prayer - Praying Wives Devotionals." Covenant is something that we must take seriously. God is a covenant God and everything he does is based on covenant. As wives we have a responsibility to God, to honor our marriages even when it seems others don't.
